1st District Wisconsin Assembly
At the Democratic Party of Door County fund raising event in February, Dick outlined some of the issues key to his no nonsense campaign.
These are issues that he is hearing from people at their front doors, in their neighborhood meetings and at constituency/ organization meetings throughout the District. People are angry and frustrated. They know we can and must do better.... Madison has to quit all its nonsense. These are his "marching orders":
1) Bring some common sense to the legislature!
People are tired of feeling like politics is superceding action. The issues are too important for more Republican knee-jerk nay saying AND for Democratic one-up-manship. There is too much nonsense going on.
2) Get the economy moving again!
Large businesses get all the tax breaks and incentives but it is small businesses that create 75% or more of the new jobs. Agriculture, service providers, entrepreneurs, machine shops need an advocate in the legislature. Many of the new jobs are in "green fields" that are sustainable and actually produce things people need. IInvesting in our future makes good sense.
3) Provide leadership in the debate about how we are going to adequately fund education for the students that are our future!
Short-term solutions have failed our students. Our schools are in crisis and the funding black-hole is worsening. Schools Districts are being forced to make up for Madison's unkept promises. Teachers must be part of the dialogue and must not be forced to bear the burden of waste which in some districts approaches 40% of the budget.
4) Keep Wisconsin in a leadership position in the national health care reform debate.
Our Senior Care, Badger Care Plus and High Risk Insurance Pool ensure access to health care for almost everyone in Wisconsin. With some "tweeking" the Wisconsin model needs to be protected and needs to be the basis for the national health care reform efforts. Insurance reform is important but is not enough.
5) Make sure our Veterans have full access to the new health services clinics being built in Green Bay.
Keep the pressure on employers to provide paid leave when a Vet is accessing services. Support transportation alternatives such as Dial-A-Ride. Provide an on-site link to other state and county services available to Vets.
6) Help solve the foreclosure crisis!
The marketplace is failing consumers who need lower rate mortgages and help managing their debts. The last thing we need is more homeless families. This is the disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street... DO SOMETHING, WE NEED HELP! The crisis needs no nonsense leadership.
7) Judicial Campaign Financing!
Finally, Democrats have begun to fulfill their promise to get big money and big influence out of judicial elections. Now that Supreme Court races have public financing available, keep the momentum going to other judicial races as well.
